Matthew Partially Missing?
Due to car trouble, I missed half of Jacobs this morning!
Instead the kids got to work on a practice quiz on lines. I want them to do their best to finish this tonight, but I understand that life happens. However, this rain is making me think games are going to be called off.
We're down for the count!

The light bulb comes on!
The kids have been spending a lot of time on linear functions and today they learned another way to graph -- point-slope!
They also had a few problems to practice for homework, see below.

Upcoming Exam Days
Heads up posting--
All of my morning math classes take an end-of-year, cumulative final
exams. I wanted to go ahead and let you know those dates: May 13 &
14. Believe it or not, it really does take two days to complete the
exam. :)
And of course, the week prior to those days will be spent in review.
The kids will find this out this coming week.
Have a great weekend!
Bringing it on home...
Today we came full circle in our study of graphing, and graphing lines specifically. We solidified our knowledge of intercepts, y and x, and finally got to look at defining slope as rise over run (or rise/run or "change in y"/"change in x"). And boy did we have some light bulbs go off!
At the end of class the kids got 6 lines to graph using their newfound method of graphing--y-intercept and slope. They liked it much better than the other ways. :)

Piecing the Pieces Together...
What a day!
Today I shared with the kids some of the things I learned yesterday at my professional development day in Raleigh. Be on the lookout for more information about that soon in another post. :)
We worked with the packet that I left the kids for yesterday on x & y intercepts and they found it a little challenging. I expected that. We spent today going through and filling in the gaps. Tonight's homework is posted below:

They should take these two equations and find the x/y intercepts and graph it. Remember that the y intercept is when x = 0 and the x intercept is when y = 0! We'll finish up by talking a lot more about slope tomorrow. We're in the throws of graphing lines!

April 16th
Today we had a block schedule- 2nd and 4th period. Matthew is at a math conference in Raleigh so he made us a packet on graphing and parabolas. If you don't finish it is for homework.

Non-Math Day!
I have been working these Jacobs kids REALLY hard now for many, many weeks and when they asked for a non-math day at the beginning of the week, it didn't take me long to come to the realization that we needed one badly! So today was full of food, funny stories, and just hanging out and enjoying each other's company.
Next Monday we will pick up right where we left off in Chapter 3, Lesson 4. We're right on track!

4-4-08: What We Did In Class Today
Today in class we worked Ch. 3, L2, Sets 1 & 2. Homework is to finish part of set 2, I forget what, sorry! If you would like to know or add to the List of Things To Do In Jacobs, see Alex Ulin. If you would like to hear Benjamin say, "René Descartes" in an awesome accent, see Benjamin. That's all and have a good night! ~Davi

Starting a New Chapter
We've officially started a new chapter back in our Jacobs texts--in fact, Chapter 3 is our last chapter!
Why Chapter 3 now at the end of the year, you ask? Well, when your children enter Algebra I next year, after a brief period of review, guess what their first order of business is? Graphing lines! (Which is the basis of Chapter 3.) So that's why.
It's Chapter 3, a few extra thrown in there, and then Final Exam time. We're down for the count!
